You may have heard the news that we have decided to close Kayak HQ. It was not an easy decision to make, but the point was reached where changes were required. Here is the background behind the decision.

Kayak HQ has been selling kayaks and accessories in Nelson for over 11 years now. In that time there have been lots of changes within the industry and we’ve worked hard to stay relevant and to provide a high level of service to our customers. However, this level of dedication comes at a cost. And that cost has been time. I have put more hours into the business than I should have. In July 2024, I realised that I needed to change how I operated Kayak HQ. It was time to spend more time with the whānau. And it was also time to address my deteriorating mental health. I decided the best way forward was to close the door to the shop rather than to make changes to the Kayak HQ brand. The decision was not taken lightly, and I know plenty of people would love to have seen Kayak HQ remain in business. But, it was time to put family first.

Over the years I have met some wonderful people, and I truly appreciate each and every customer we’ve had. A big thanks goes out to suppliers, who have given heaps of support to Kayak HQ. Along the way, we’ve supported heaps of races and events and it’s been a privilege to be able to help the competitive side of paddling. The most humbling aspect has been meeting people who have undertaken some epic journeys to raise money and awareness for some very special causes. It’s always been a non-brainer when it comes to offering support to those who are undertaking these missions. And the last appreciation shout out goes to those who have worked short term and part time in the shop.

Thanks for the support, the yarns and the memories. I look forward to seeing our customers out on the river or the ocean in the future. Chris

As of September 2024, we will be operating online and will continue to operate this way until remaining stock has been sold. We’ll be available to answer questions you may have on any products you have purchased from us. If you need any parts for your Norse sea kayak, or Think surfski, please get in touch. We’ll keep parts on hand until someone takes over importing these brands. We also have stock of parts for Native Watercraft and Liquidlogic kayaks too.

If you have the desire to run a kayak retail business, give me a yell. It would be great to see the Kayak HQ brand live on. While the business is not being actively sold, it can be!
